The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

This book hands down is one of my favorite books I have read in 2022. I read this book within two days. The way the author illustrated everything made it hard to put the book down. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo tells the story of Evelyn Hugo who is determined to secure A-list status in the industry and will do whatever it takes to get there. The ending of this book left me speechless, Evelyn gave the opportunity to a journalist to tell her story. The story explains how she fell in love with being famous but that fame came with many challenges that resulted in her hiding her true emotions.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book.

  • "To be clear, there are things I regret. It's just...it's not really the sordid things. I don't regret many of the lies I told or the people I hurt. I'm OK with the fact that sometimes doing the right thing gets ugly. And also, I have compassion for myself." Page 25

  • "Do you understand what I'm telling you? When you're given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn't give things, you take things. If you learn one thing from me, it should probably be that" Page 35

  • "First. you have to push people's boundaries and not feel bad about it. No one is going to give you anything if you don't ask for it. You tried. You were told no. Get over it." Page 95

  • "People think that intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth. When you realize you can tell someone your truth when you can show yourself to them when you stand in front of them bare and their response is "You're safe with me"- that's intimacy" Page 112

  • "People are messy. and love can be ugly. I'm inclined to always err on the side of compassion" Page 252

  • "There's a difference between sexuality and sex. I used sex to get what I wanted. Sex is just an act. Sexuality is a sincere expression of desire and pleasure." Page 271
